The skin undergoes changes as the body ages or when exposed continuously to the sun’s harmful rays, pollution, chemicals, and many others. While the signs of aging is a natural process, wrinkles, fine lines, and deep creases can create a perpetually tired or angry appearance in the face.
Dr. John Silverton, a board-certified plastic surgeon based in Stockton, California, offers Botox® injection as an effective solution to help banish or reduce the signs of aging.
What is Botox®?
A popular non-surgical injection that reduces or eliminates forehead creases, crows’ feet, frown lines, and many other forms of wrinkles. Short for botulinum toxin A, Botox® is a purified substance that blocks nerve signals from reaching facial muscles responsible for contracting and forming various facial expressions. Because a Botox® injection relaxes the muscles temporarily, unwanted facial muscles are diminished.
What are the benefits of Botox®?
Although Botox® injection treatments are for cosmetic purposes, they offer more than just reduced wrinkles. Botox® can help smooth deep furrows between the eyebrows, frown lines, crows’ feet near the eyes, and skin bands on the neck. A Botox® injection can also rejuvenate the face, making it youthful and awake.
Even though Botox® is just a temporary fix for unwanted facial wrinkles, it can also help reduce the appearance of creases even if the patient stops the treatment. With prolonged use, the facial muscles become accustomed to a relaxed state that even if Botox® injection is discontinued the appearance of wrinkles is reduced. Additionally, Botox® injections can help curb migraine headaches and excessive sweating.
Does Botox® injection hurt?
Any forms of injections can cause discomfort. However, Dr. Silverton uses small needles for Botox®, so the pain and discomfort is minimal. Dr. Silverton can also apply numbing cream on the target area before administering Botox® injections to reduce pain, if the patients prefer it.
What is the Botox® injection recovery like?
As Botox® treatments do not require anesthesia, patients can return to most of their normal activities following the treatment, such as work and running errands. However, it is best to avoid exercise for 6 hours after treatment. Too much exercise too soon can simply wash away the Botox® before it is fully absorbed.
Patients can see immediate results following Botox® treatments and can enjoy a fully rejuvenated, youthful face for three to six months.
