What is an Aesthetician?
An aesthetician is a trained, licensed skincare specialist who focuses on advanced beauty treatments. Cosmetic aestheticians can remove unwanted hair, treat acne, reduce the visible signs of aging, minimize the appearance of scars, and treat problems with skin pigmentation. They can also use their professional cosmetics training to help patients look their best for an important event, such as a wedding or photo shoot.
Some aestheticians, called medical (or clinical) aestheticians, treat skin that has been severely damaged by burns, chemotherapy, accidents, or surgery. Aestheticians also work with patients with multiple allergies, sensitivities, or skin conditions, helping them select the right skincare products to meet their needs.
Like plastic surgeons, aestheticians must complete a course of training and gain practical experience before they can be granted a license. Most aestheticians have completed formal education in either cosmetology or aesthetician training and have a diploma or associate degree in these arts. Aestheticians are also lifelong learners who must be committed to regularly updating their skills and credentials as the field of skincare evolves.
What Kind of Services Does an Aesthetician Provide?
The services provided by aestheticians add an important dimension to cosmetic medicine. While plastic surgery can dramatically alter the structure of the face or body to create a more pleasing shape, it doesn’t typically improve the condition of the epidermis. Targeted skincare therapies are therefore needed to combat the superficial signs of aging and other distracting blemishes. Sandra provides the following skincare services for Dr. Silverton’s patients, complementing his skills as a surgeon:
- Deep exfoliation: Deep exfoliation removes excess oil, dead skin cells, dirt, and other debris from the pores. This primes the skin so that it can properly absorb topical treatments. It also reduces acne symptoms. Sandra follows up her exfoliation treatments with the application of a nourishing face mask that replenishes the skin’s vitality and luster.
- Obagi system skincare: The Obagi system is a line of advanced skincare products designed by Dr. Obagi. It includes a wide range of gentle exfoliants and nourishing serums that have been designed to hydrate and nourish the skin. The Obagi system can be used to remove blemishes and the signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, and areas of rough or scaly skin.
- Latisse®: Latisse® is a completely safe, FDA approved lash growth serum. Over the course of about 16 weeks, Latisse® can increase the length of the lashes by up to 25%. It also makes them 18% darker and 106% thicker.
