Pro-Nox: The Latest Solution to Surgical Pain

One of the biggest concerns patients have when considering plastic surgery is pain management. This fear is understandable; the human brain is hardwired to experience anxiety at the prospect of pain. At Silverton Plastic Surgery, we make every effort to keep our patients completely comfortable before, during, and after their procedures. Fortunately, we have a powerful tool at our disposal: an innovative sedation system called Pro-Nox that’s designed to minimize both anxiety and pain.

What is Pro-Nox?

Pro-Nox is a mixture of 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) that is delivered to the patient via inhalation. The patient takes a few deep breaths from a tube that contains Pro-Nox and, within seconds, he or she relaxes into a comfortably sedated state. There are no injections to worry about, and Pro-Nox delivers a moderate form of sedation, compared to general anesthesia. Rather than simply becoming unconscious, the patient will drift into a peaceful, dream-like state where they are completely relaxed. Many patients find using Pro-Nox much more pleasant and less intimidating than going under anesthesia.

What Are the Benefits of Pro-Nox?

In addition to providing a comfortable experience for patients, Pro-Nox offers a number of important safety and usability benefits:

  • Pro-Nox carries absolutely no risk of infection. While infection does not commonly occur when general anesthesia is administered correctly, there is always a slight risk of passing on viruses or bacteria to the patient with any intravenous treatment. This risk does not exist with Pro-Nox because it’s delivered pneumatically.
  • Pro-Nox is completely safe to use. Unlike intravenous anesthetic, Pro-Nox is so free of risk that patients even use it during childbirth. Many patients who are having noninvasive or minimally invasive treatments where there is a slight risk of pain, such as laser or ultrasound-based procedures, prefer Pro-Nox for this reason. After all, one of the incentives of choosing a nonsurgical treatment is that they are less risky than surgery.
  • Pro-Nox lets patients return to their lives more quickly. One of the biggest downsides of “going under” grogginess and nausea. Patients who have general anesthesia usually report feeling very tired for three to five days after their procedure. Pro-Nox, by contrast, clears from the body in just minutes, letting you get on with your life as normal. Using Pro-Nox allows these patients to experience relief from pain and nervousness without creating a need for rest after procedures that otherwise boast zero downtime. Additionally, most patients can safely drive home after having Pro-Nox (something that is never possible after having general anesthesia). This makes cosmetic procedures more accessible to all patients.
  • Pro-Nox is easy to use and extremely affordable. In addition to making the lives of clinicians simpler, this aspect of Pro-Nox is good for patients. By keeping the costs of sedation low, Pro-Nox allows plastic surgeons to reduce their operating costs. This translates into lower procedure costs, making plastic surgery and cosmetic medicine more affordable for everyone.

Unsurprisingly given all these advantages, Pro-Nox has a very high rate of patient satisfaction. Many patients report preferring sedation with Pro-Nox to conventional sedation.

When Can I Choose Pro-Nox?

Pro-Nox can be used with most surgical procedures, sometimes in combination with local anesthetic for additional pain relief. It’s important to understand that the use of Pro-Nox isn’t limited to procedures that have a known potential to cause soreness. Pro-Nox can be used virtually any time a patient has fears or concerns, because of its ability to mitigate anxiety. If, for instance, you have a phobia of needles, you should feel free to request Pro-Nox when you decide to get Botox® or dermal filler injections.
